Burnout 5 coming in 2007.

Don't get me wrong, Burnout Revenge on Xbox 360 was good fun, but hardly the next-generation Burnout experiences most were hoping for; if anything, it proved a decent diversion for early adaptors. Here's the real deal: Criterion and Electronic Arts announced this morning plans to release Burnout 5 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 sometime in 2007.

Chances are the name will change, though, considering Criterion is ditching the linear nature of the series open ended gameplay set in a fictional Paradise City. "Burnout 5 is a complete reinvention of the series, built from the ground up for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360," said Alex Ward, Director of Game Design at Criterion, in the announcement release. "To create truly next-generation gameplay, we needed to create a truly next-generation game, from top to bottom."

How will players react to the change? Clearly, with the series entering its fifth installment, Criterion needs a new direction, but hopefully with an option for fans to skip to the next event without having to mess with sandbox gameplay, if they don't want to. Nonetheless, they're definitely aiming for a more intimate atmosphere, as each players will also be assigned a Drivers License fitted with their most destructive crashes and traffic violations.

Oh, and get this: your car can literally rip in half if you're crazy enough. Bring it on.
