PS3 delayed until March 2007

For weeks, we've wondered how Sony hadn't started production on PlayStation 3, despite its continued stance its previously announced worldwide launch was still on track, they were still planning on six million units of hardware globally before the end of their fiscal year, and production honestly was supposed to start soon. Apparently, not soon enough for Europe, though.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced this morning that it has "revised" the launch date for PS3 in Europe, Russia, Middle East, Africa and Australasia from November 17th to an unspecified date in March 2007.
Unexpectedly, production has been blamed, with SCEE citing a "delay in the mass production schedule of the blue laser diode within the Sony Group, thus affecting the timely procurement of key components to be utilised in PLAYSTATION 3."
An article in the European Herald Tribune quotes Sony Computer Entertainment Chief Ken Kutaragi breaking the news. "We decided to focus on the Japanese and U.S. markets," he said. "I am so sorry not to be able to answer to all the expectations."
Additionally, Sony has revised its shipment numbers for both the US and Japan -- hold onto your butts. America will receive roughly 400,000 units come November 17th, while Japan will be forced to manage with a launch number totaling only 100,000. The production problems have forced a one month delay, removing about one million units from their original launch plans, said Sony to the European press.
Once again, Europe's forced to bite the bullet. |
